The Story Behind my First Logo Design and What I Learned

The Mid Drive logo was more than just a job. It was my first real chance and the start of a journey that taught me how a single opportunity can change your life. Even today, that logo is still a big part of Gweru, and so is the story behind it.

The story behind my first real logo design is not just about creativity. It is a memory from my earliest days at university when I was still figuring out where I belonged and what I could do. It was not my very first logo but it was the first one that really mattered, the first that became a landmark in my journey. It all started with an idea for a design club at Midlands State University. I was still Level 1.2, hungry to do something more than just attend lectures. I thought maybe I could gather a group of students who loved art and design so I found myself one afternoon at the Student Affairs office, hoping to register the club and maybe get a bit of support.

That is where I met Mr Ilunga. He was an employee there, an older respectable man who everyone called sir. I had never spoken to him before but he listened as I explained the club idea. We talked for a while and then he surprised me. He said, “Actually, I am planning to open a driving school here in Gweru. I need a logo. Do you think you could design one for me?” I had never designed anything for a real client before, not for money, not with this kind of pressure. But I said yes, trying to sound more confident than I felt.

That night I did not sleep. My mind kept spinning with possibilities. What does a driving school logo look like? Should I use a steering wheel, a car or a road? I must have sketched a dozen different ideas, scrapping most of them and starting again. I wanted to impress Mr Ilunga, not just because he was a staff member but because this was my shot at proving myself. For two or three days I obsessed over it, missing meals, staring at my sketchbook and my old laptop, trying to make something that looked professional and original.

When I finally had three versions, I was nervous but hopeful. I remember waiting outside his office, the designs saved on my flash drive, my heart beating faster than normal. He invited me in and I showed him the logos, explaining each one and how it could represent his new business. I watched his face for a reaction, not sure if he would like anything. To my relief, he smiled and nodded, pointing to the one he liked best. He said it was exactly what he was hoping for. There is nothing like that feeling, knowing you have solved someone’s problem with your own creativity and that your work will be out there in the world, on signboards and business cards all over Gweru.

He did not pay me much and I was not expecting much, to be honest. The real reward was the confidence it gave me and the realisation that what I had learned alone, late at night, could actually be useful to someone else. That job changed the way I saw myself. I did not open the club after all. Life took me in another direction. But from that moment, I began to think about business, about serving real clients, about what it means to build a career from your talent.

Looking back, the Mid Drive logo was a turning point. The logo became one of the most recognizable driving school brands in Gweru and even today in 2025, it still dominates. Every time I see it in town, I remember those first nervous sketches and sleepless nights. It was not perfect. I made plenty of mistakes along the way but it was a beginning. It showed me that with a bit of courage, a willingness to learn and the guts to try, you can turn a small chance into a big step forward. Mr Ilunga became more than just a client. He was loyal and trusted me to design three more logos for his other ventures. That first job was the start of something bigger.

The story behind that first logo design is a reminder that the best journeys do not start with big budgets or fancy studios. Sometimes they start with one conversation, a bit of trust and a long night fueled by dreams and uncertainty. For me, that is the real heart of branding and creativity, solving problems, building confidence and turning the ordinary into something that lasts.
